Nuku Hiva:   Daniel's Bay

Daniel's Bay, Nuku Hiva
 |
| Lagoon leading in to Daniel's house and small village of 12 people |
This is the bay that the TV show "Survivor"

| Trail to waterfall |
was filmed in. It is spectacularly beautiful and
the entrance overlaps itself so that you are completely protected from swell and most winds
once inside.
We took a hike back behind Daniel's home and the village of 12 people to the source of all their
water - a 900 foot waterfall! It is very
spectacular! It is about a 2-hour hike away from the
anchorage and well worth the walk! Angela made the hike with Anne, John and Tomos from
Merlin's Magic one day and Eric made the hike two days later with friends from the boats
Getten (a single hander from Japan) and Keeshond (Neil &
Fiona from England). Eric

was sick the first few days after we arrived, so had to view the second showing of the falls.
Either day, the hike was made
 |

 |
| Only the base of the falls are visible when close to it |
worthwhile not only by the views at the end, but also by the
refreshingly cool water that pooled up around the base of the falls. It was impossible to see the
whole waterfall when you were at it. The water falls straight down through a rock opening,
shielding
the upper part of the falls from view. From 1/2 mile away, the full 900 foot veil of water is in view
and quite a sight!
After Eric's hike, we met the infamous Daniel (born 1927). He has log books from back to the
mid-1970's that cruisers have signed and left photos in. We looked for Rouser's first time

around but couldn't find their sign-in. When he came back from the falls, he was excited to show
me this, and we quickly went in in the dinghy. This was the only time we went ashore without any
bug spray, and consequently, the only time that we encountered no-see-ums on shore! The bites are
SO itchy!!! For days! The little bugs are so small but can do a lot of damage. We only were
on shore that once without bug spray, but paid the price with bites all over so that we each
looked as if we had chicken pox. We almost resorted to duct-taping pot holders onto our hands
so that we wouldn't scratch them... it was SO tempting!!!
