Cabo Pulmo Reef - Los Frailes, B.C.S., Mexico

A Little Bit Fishy!

Getting ready for dive
12 Dec 2002, Thursday - Our first day anchored in Los Frailes, we heard of a reef right around the corner that seemed like it would be good to check out.
Greg & Sujata's first snorkel experience
Michael and Ben went around in the dinghy to reconn. The holding ground looked good and it appeared to be a fun dive/snorkel spot, but it would be a long trip (especially if carrying dive gear) in the dinghies. It is much less protected than our anchorage in Los Frailes, but we decided to take one boat around with all the gear and just have someone on board at all times to keep an eye out in case the anchor should drag.

Waking Dream became the obvious choice for this adventure because they had all the toys on their boat. They would be bringing dive gear for 3 and a hooka, so they volunteered to be

the group ferry service.

In the end, we had 12 people head out there: Ben and Lisa from Waking Dream, Michael and Sara from Pelican, Earl and Maria from Dos Brisas, Jim and Penny from Alii Kai Too, us, and Greg and Sujata from Majii Rae. It felt as if we were on a chartered dive trip!

When we arrived, it turned out to be quite a rough anchorage. The wind was blowing onshore at around 15-20 knots with really choppy seas. Some people thought that they may not even go, but eventually decided that it would be calmer in the water than on the boat. This turned out to be the case, and all who went enjoyed it immensly. For Sujata, it was her

first time ever snorkeling (top right with husband Greg). While these were pretty rough conditions to go out for the first time, she still had a wonderful time. Since she had no gear of her own, Angela lent out

her wetsuit and gear to her for the first part of the day. We hope that this helped in the rough seas since Angela's snorkel self-clears.

While on a dive (we borrowed tanks from Waking Dream), Eric (left) was followed by a little Porcupinefish (right). This little buddy followed him around for a long time on the dive. Eric put his hand out in front of his face to try to get him to puff up, but he never did. He was just content to hang out and see where Eric was going.
