Monterey Bay, CA

Monterey Bay Pier

Monterey Pier
1-3 Oct 2002 - Monterey Bay was the one location other than Olympia, Washington that we seriously considered moving to after grad school. The scenery is amazing, almost as unbelievable as the cost of living - which is the reason that we chose Olympia in the end. It really made us wonder whether or not we would have ended up taking a trip quite like this if we had made other choices. In the end, we are both glad that we chose Olympia. We made some wonderful friends that made up for all the rain plus some!

We walked along the wharf the night we arrived and enjoyed all the free samples of clam chowder and other soups that the vendors were giving away in the hopes that it would entice you to buy from them. We ended up not being hungry after one lap of the wharf and so returned without buying anything. We did, however, make a note as to which places we felt were the best and returned the next evening to buy some soup in a bread bowl.

Seals abound!
All around Monterey wharf and marina, there are tons of seals! Seals on the rocks, seals on buoys, seals on docks! The first night we arrived, we thought that someone had fallen in the water and was trying to get out. Then a huge splash of water hit our boat about the same time that we were scrambling to check for this suspected swimmer. We thought maybe a fishing boat had thrown a bucket of water and accidentally hit us. It turned out that all of this commotion was caused by one rowdy seal that was thrashing about eating a large fish. One word of advice, stay out of their way! Yowza...

Montery Shorelines

2 Oct 2002 - For seven hours,
Lover's Point
we walked everywhere that was within walking distance! We enjoyed the views from Lover's Point (left), explored all of downtown Monterey, took a free historical tour, and poked around Pacific Grove and Cannery Row. There are walking trails all along the water from one town to the next which makes for great foot-travel.

After all this walking, we returned to downtown Monterey for the Farmer's Market. There we sampled some delicious fruit, bread, vinegars, desserts and more. People really rave about wine tasting in Napa Valley... we suggest the Monterey Farmer's Market as an alternative! Here, they had wines and much more to sample for free! Much less driving involved too! The Farmer's Market is an open air affair along the main downtown street, Alvarado, in Monterey. We picked up some 4-seed sourdough bread, extraordinary basil, roasted garlic and chocolate chip cookies as a fun treat!
