| Sunrise after leaving Olympia at 3AM! |
3 Aug 2002, Saturday - At 0330
(3:30 AM!!!), several people actually showed up at the dock to send
us off! We agree that they are all crazy - never a question as
they ARE our friends! Boat friends Holly,
Web and Mark showed up - the local "C" dock crowd,
neighbors we were lucky enough to have had for the last couple
years. The "B" dock gang also ventured over. Friends Keith & Amy trekked out to the dock
as well, both arguably more awake than the crew!
At 3:45 AM, we left the dock! On board were both of us (Eric
& Angela), our friend John Summers (aka "Seven") who sailed the whole
way down the coast with us, and Eric's dad, Rich. Rich was
just catching a ride to Port Angeles to experience the beginning of
our adventure.
After motoring ALL day, we pulled into Port Townsend at 5:15
PM. We stayed overnight in Port Townsed at the free city
dock.

4 Aug 2002, Sunday - We relaxed and toured the fun town of Port
Townsend. John took us all out to the Rose Theatre in town to
see the movie "Road to Perdition" with Tom Hanks. It was about
the life of a member of the mob. Good movie, great old
theatre. Later, we met up with some friends of ours,
John & Kate, on an Alberg 30 named
"Cleo-del-Mar". We all went out to dinner together at the
local Thai restaurant. How can anyone not LOVE phad
thai?!?!? Afterwards, we went to sleep early since we had
early morning plans for departure!

| Glass-calm water entering the Straits of Juan de Fuca. |
5 Aug 2002, Monday - We left Port Townsend at 6:00 AM and
arrived in Port Angeles at noon. We had anticipated that this trip would take
longer, but encountered no winds or even swell in the Strait of
Juan de Fuca that morning. It was like we were on a
lake! Nobody complained because we were expecting to be heading into strong headwinds.
While in town, we dropped off Rich at the ferry terminal and
then headed out to buy our last minute supplies of fresh
produce.

6 Aug 2002, Tuesday -
Our last leg before we headed out into the ocean with
Rouser... we departed Port Angeles at 4:30 AM to catch the ebb tide and were
able to pull in to Neah Bay at 12:20 PM. Again, we did not
have any wind and had to motor the whole way. We filled up
with diesel at the Makah Marina ($3.46 worth after waiting for a boat with
a 175 gallon tank to fill up - the guy just laughed!) and stayed
at a dock for the night. We figured that we could use a
good sleep in preparation for the next few days. The forecast looked good, so we planned to leave the next morning. In
order to have easy-to-make meals available while at sea if the weather got sloppy, Eric
made bean & cheese burritos and Angela made spinach lasagna. Both could
be reheated easily and eaten if nothing else was being prepared. Afterwards,
we all took showers, ate a good dinner and went to bed early.
